Abstract: Female circumcision/female genital mutilation (FC/FGM) is a practice that involves partial or total removal of the female external genitalia and/or injury to the female genital organs for cultural or any other nontherapeutic reasons. It is primarily practiced in 28 countries in Africa, but it has also been documented among a few ethnic groups in parts of Asia and the Near East. Worldwide, an estimated 30 million women and girls have undergone some form of cutting. Women's nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) in Africa have led active campaigns to stop the practice of FC/FGM for over 20 years, and the international community has joined in these efforts as well. Interventions include the use of any array of visual and written materials, from the informational video documentary for international policy makers to the locally produced poster for village-level motivation. This issue of "What's New" offers a glimpse at the massive international effort to eradicate FC/FGM. It lists over 90 pamphlets, posters, videos and other materials. Includes information on RAINBO, a non-governmental organization endeavoring to stop the practice of female genital mutilation. less
