Antiretroviral Therapy in Primary Health Care: Experience of the Khayelitsha Programme in South Africa: Case study (2003)
"The Khayelitsha ARV treatment project was initiated to demonstrate that treating HIV/AIDS with antiretroviral (ARV) drugs in a primary health care setting and in a resource-limited environment is feasible and replicable. In addition, it aimed to prove that developing countries can provide affordable HIV/AIDS care with low-cost ARV drugs. After two years, the program has produced invaluable lessons, which are outlined in this paper."

Approaches to the Management of HIV/AIDS in Cuba (2004)
Part of a series of case studies on ART, this document describes Cuba's work on HIV and AIDS. Cuba is one of the few developing countries to provide comprehensive health care for people living with HIV/AIDS. Key to its success has been the political will to act and not wait for external assistance. Their HIV/AIDS program is based on a comprehensive health care system that has facilitated good control over blood transfusion and blood products as well as prevention of mother-to-child transmission.

Introducing Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) on a Large Scale: Hope and Caution (2002)
"This paper provides program planning and management guidance to resource-limited countries that seek to implement expanded ART services. It includes specific guidance on setting criteria for receiving ART and deciding on treatment protocols, laboratory, clinical, counseling and pharmaceutical services. In addition, it includes guidance for estimating program costs, human resources and training requirements, and examples of communication messages specific to ART programs. It suggests components for a national ART program and topics for key operations research requirements specific to resource-limited countries."
